Idea #75 - The Peculiar Whimsy of Aube Perrie

Today we watched the music video of Harry Styles' recent hit Music For a Sushi Restaurant and analysed the surrealism in the storytelling of director Aube Perrie.

Music For a Sushi Restaurant, a seemingly abstract music video, holds more essence and significance than is evident at first. It is metaphorical to the lives of celebrities, who are only appreciated while they still have something to bring to the table, but as soon as they fumble, they are so conveniently and without contemplation replaced.

We also watched Aube Perrie’s music video for Chemical that cites in perfect detail and wit the conflict of a loyal husband, faltering momentarily in his loyalty. With the face of a dog and a “loyal to one” tattoo, we see similarities between him and an actual dog, who would never leave his owner, despite moments of shaky conscience.

Aube Perrie’s videos are always a ride, one moment your fists are clenched, and the other, your drops. The hidden symbolism and metaphor combined with Perrie’s crisp and bold art style that merges the real and the unreal is something every artist can, oddly, relate to, and be inspired by!
