Idea #5 - An Observation of Masculinity in Power of The Dog
For what kind of man would I be, if I did not help my mother? - Peter
Today, we watched the trailer of 'The Power of the Dog' — a movie by Jane Campion, followed by a video essay. It is based on the 1967 novel 'The Power of the Dog' by Thomas Savage.
The film is a great example of the phrase show don't tell because no information has been spoonfed to the viewer. The movie has excellently communicated the sentiments of every scene with impeccable sound design, camera work and set design.
Today's discussion was to ponder over the main theme of the film- 'Masculinity as a mask'. Campion has beautifully portrayed the struggles of three men trying to be their definition of a "man". The movie compels us to redefine the word 'man'.
"Self-expression is what makes us human, and we are humans before conforming with any gender and its norms"- Manya Kumar.
So, our message to everyone is - just be yourself and pursue your purpose.
